“I have always been intrigued by the happenstance of weathered surfaces and organic textures and patterns,” says fiber artist Kathy Grady whose layered textile work will be featured in the exhibition titled “Stratum,” opening with a reception on Friday, July 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Alliance Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center in Narrowsburg, NY. The exhibit will be on view through July 23, 2011.
“My passion is fabric and all of its textures, patterns, and colors,” says Grady. She creates surface designs on fabric using dyes, silkscreen, and thermofax screens to print graphic images. She also employs layering and stitching fabric. Grady is inspired as much by nature as by torn posters and dilapidated buildings.
After receiving a BFA in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Grady freelanced as a graphic designer in New York City. “During my subway commutes into New York, I photographed the layers of posters in the subway and on construction sites. In my travels, I was drawn to the look of peeling paint and plaster on ancient buildings.”
Grady currently lives in Narrowsburg and uses fiber arts in her work with disabled adults at The Center for Discovery and the College for Educational Enrichment at Sullivan County Community College. “I see life as a series of overlapping layers; layers of experience, relationships, meaning, and emotion,” she explains. “With a mix of planning, happy surprises, and contemplation, the interplay of the fabrics, prints, and colors define the final images. For me, these compositions reflect the complex layers of our lives.”
This exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts.
Alliance Gallery is located at the Delaware Arts Center at 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibit call (845) 252-7576.
