Tusten Theatre Explodes with Jazz and
Sound Sculpture
May 19, June 9, and June 23, 2007
Delaware Valley Arts Alliance is proud to open its 17th Tusten Theatre Season on Saturday, May 19 with the great jazz sounds of Paul Meyers Quartet, featuring the great tenor sax and flute player Frank Wess. Jazz continues on Saturday, June 9, with saxophone and flute player/composer Sam Morrison’s Quintet. And on Saturday, June 23, the Arts Alliance presents “Sound Sculpture....Full Moon Rising,” a 14-movement percussion piece by Tom Holmes and Tom Moonan that utilizes dozens of instruments installed on the Tusten Theatre stage.

Paul Meyers’ great skills in both the jazz and Brazilian arenas have made him one of the most in demand guitar players in New York. The New York Times has called him “One of the most eloquent jazz guitarists since Kenny Burrell.” On May 19, Meyers shares the stage with Martin Wind (bass), who has played with Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, and Toots Tielemans; Tony Jefferson (drums) who has appeared at many jazz festivals around the world and is an active player on the New York jazz scene; and Frank Wess (flute/sax) one of the most important flute players in jazz history, best known for his many years with Count Basie.
On June 9, alumni of Miles Davis’s band, sax and flute player Sam Morrison takes the stage with a quintet of all-stars jazz players including Jeff Ciampa, a cutting edge guitarist who is plays in the band Elements, also from Elements, Mark Egan, one of the most respected bassists on the music scene today; T. Xiques, the versatile drummer whose credits include the Australian rock band Brother; and leading tabla player Badal Roy who has performed with jazz legends such as Dizzie Gillespie and Herbie Mann.

These jazz events will be followed by “Sound Sculpture....Full Moon Rising” by Tom Moonan and Tom Holmes on June 23. Friends since their college days, the two Toms have worked over the years to further the sound sculpture dream and to refine its parameters. Every event in the 14-movement piece represents a fragment in the musical and sculptural development of these two powerful artists. This tapestry of musical events traces their intellectual and emotion journey, which the two artists use to pry open our compassion and senses.
All shows begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $20 for Paul Meyers Quartet, $15 each for Sam Morrison and “Sound Sculpture....Full Moon Rising.” DVAA members receive a $2 per ticket discount for advanced sales. No discounts are given at the box office. For reservations or information call the Tusten Theatre box office at (845) 252-7272. Credit cards and checks are accepted.
